Spence is based in New York City and Vermont. She grew up on Mount Desert Island in Maine before attending Parsons School of Design in New York. Spence had her first solo exhibition at legendary dealer Colin DeLand’s American Fine Arts gallery in 1998, a space at the intersection of art, fashion and performance whose archives are now held at The Smithsonian and Bard College Library.
